Every once in a while I've realized that I accidentally skipped one. Oddly, retirement has not in the least made the "I have 40 things to do, which one do I do TODAY?" thing any better.Īt some point I'd like to start at the beginning of the multi-thousand CD collection and verify that I really did get everything onto the server. I use a second set of 8TB drives for DVD-A and multichannel SACD, though I just started the SACDs within the last few months and am having a hard time following through. My main drive for stereo PCM/Stereo DSD/DTS/AC-3 material that can be played via a Logitech Squeezebox (or emulator) is 6TB and backed up to two 8TB local drives as well as offsite via CrashPlan. I may or may not ever actually listen to some of the more obscure/redundant material, but I figure if I want to do it at all, I may as well do it completely.īack when a 750GB hard drive was HUGE I was more selective and tried to only keep what I thought were the best versions of any given work, but that's bitten me more than once over the years (even just within the last few months) when I realized I'd neglected something that turned out to be unique. I've done very little video so far, but would like to compile the music videos some day as well. I ripped all the stuff from Tull's Stand Up reissue (excellent stuff), and none of the stuff from Yes' TFTO (I still cant get into that disc, but I really gotta try again).:lookaround If a Hi Res stereo copy becomes available, I use it to replace any CD sourced flac files of the same title. Else, each song will show up twice under the same album listing. If you do this remember to tag the album titles differently like "Meddle (2.0)" and "Meddle (5.1)". So I now routinely rip the stereo tracks as well. When stereo is required, the media player can be made to fold a MC source down to stereo, but my ear, there is often a big difference between the stereo fold down and a good dedicated stereo mix.

But if you are going to listen to the same music on a stereo and a MC system as I do, you may (as I did) soon go back and copy the Hi Res stereo tracks as well.

Like many here, I started out ripping only the 5.1 mixes from my collection.
